Education is the key to individual and social development. It is essential for personal development and a fulfilled life. Education is also a condition for sustainable development.
It enables individuals to understand the impact of their own actions on their envronment, to deal with change and risks and to take responsible decisions. In order to develop its full potential, education must be inclusive, equitable and of high quality. Education is a human right.
Inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030
With the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, states worldwide have pledged to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all" by 2030. In the UN system, the UNESCO was mandated to lead the Education 2030 Agenda. It is the only specialized UN agency monitoring progress in education worldwide. With its holistic approach to education, its innovative educational concepts and its broad network of partners in science, politics and practice, it makes a unique contribution to improving education worldwide.
Our contribution
The German Commission for UNESCO promotes a humanistic understanding of education, which envisions an education that enables learners to develop their personalities and lead a fulfilled life. The Commission contributes to the implementation of the Global Education 2030 Agenda both at international and national level.
Advising policymakers, supporting expert discussions and pooling expertise are only some of the tasks the Commission pursues. In its work on Education, the Commission's main focus is on education for sustainable development, inclusive education and Open Educational Resources. With its network of UNESCO Associated Schools in Germany and UNESCO Chairs at German universities, the German Commission for UNESCO provides a practical contribution to achieving the the Education 2030 Agenda. Its cultural volunteer service kulturweit enables young people to make valuable experiences in institutions abroad.
